Introduced for the first time in 1957 by Lorillard Tobacco Company based in Greensboro, North Carolina, United States, the brand name Newport hit the tobacco market as the first menthol cigarette. Though used by adults of any race, the brand name is often associated with African Americans. This hypothesis is seconded by a 2005 survey which states that Newport gained a leading share of the African-American cigarette market, as 49.5% of cigarettes sold out to African Americans were Newports. According to a report, Newport trades over 35 per cent of gross sale of menthol cigarettes in the United States.
In the early years of its inception, Newports classical menthol flavor cigarettes were advertised under the slogan "Enjoy full flavor menthol without drowning out pure tobacco taste." In 1960s, the slogan of Newport was "Newport tastes fresher than any other menthol cigarette". At that time the manufacturer did not target the brand towards any particular American race. However, a lawsuit revealed in 1960 that vans of Lorillard Tobacco Company made regular trips to various housing projects where in free Newport cigarettes were distributed among black children. This marks the beginning of company's strategy to target a particular race and consequently succeeded in its ambitions.
During 1970s Newport was ranked the third most popular menthol brand with Kool and Salemas its challenging competitors. In 1980s,Newport initiated another promontory campaign persuading African Americans in urban areas. In just two years, Newport emerged as the fifth most prominent cigarette brand in the market.
Between 1989 and 1996 the existing number of Newport teenager smokers doubled and this significant development is dedicated to Hipanic and White American teenagers who switched enthusiastically to Newport. Another factor that led to this progress, according to a report published by Massachusetts Department of Public Health, was that the unfiltered cigarettes of this brand contained the highest level of nicotine and in the following years even this percentage surged by another increase of 10% nicotine. The same strategy was employed by Camel cigarettes but that did not work as well as did the Newport.
As for the varieties of Newport cigarettes, they are available in three major varieties: Full Flavor; Medium; and Light. In the month of June of 2010, the "Medium" and "Light" flavors were respectively re-branded into "Blue" and "Gold". Each variety is now being sold in 80mm hard packs, 85mm soft packs and 100mm soft and hard packs. For the time being Newport has the status of Marlboro among the African Americans that shows how this brand gained its excellent status among a slew of competitive brands.
